Milk & Eggs Co.
How long have you been doing what you’re doing?
We started Milk & Eggs Company in February 2009, but we were tossing
ideas around much, much earlier.
How did you start your brand?
The same way we do everything, with a lot of procrastination. Just kidding.
We left our day jobs as designers and decided to take on freelance work
while building Milk & Eggs Co. We really like to think we started the
“right” way, with a boat load of research and a barrel full of caffeine.
As with anything, research only gets you to the line, you eventually have
to step over it.
How did you come up with the name Milk and Eggs Co.?
Milk and eggs are both essentials on our bi-weekly shopping list, and we
feel like if all we could sell were actual milk and actual eggs we’d
probably be millionaires by now, but we decided to just call the company
that and sell shirts instead.
Where are you based and what do you like (or dislike) about living and
working there?
We are currently based out of Burbank, California. Burbank is the perfect
Craigslist apartment ad: easy freeway access, walking distance to shopping
and eateries and plenty of street parking. Seriously.
Also, it is a great place to be cooking (literally, it is hot here).
What qualities set you apart from other T-Shirt making companies?
Definitely the ingredients, what other company uses 2 parts eggs and 1
part milk to print? No one, because it doesn’t work, and we tried, many
times.
What is your process for creating a new T-Shirt, do you screen print
yourselves? Etc.
We don’t really have a process, we sort of build up ideas for a couple
of weeks and then just jump in and start drawing. When we first started
we attempted to do everything, including printing. Our initial results
we’re a bit on the “shoddy” side, so we decided to outsource locally. Now,
we’ve got an awesome relationship with a printer, which allows us to focus
on designing.
What inspiration/influences do you draw from when creating new designs?
Funny, silly, every day things. Music. Movies. Play on words.
Do you bring artists/designers in to collaborate on T-shirts? If so, how do you go about finding them and deciding to include them in your
line?
So far, it’s been just the two of us.
What were you doing before this?
Watching the Real Housewives of Atlanta.
When are you most productive? Do you come up with your best ideas while your just hanging out or in a full-fledged business brainstorm session?
Definitely the former, I think we’ve only had one full-fledged business
brainstorm session, and it was required by law at a bank. Most of the time
we come up with our ideas when we aren’t really thinking about them.
Is there any direction you hope to take your line in in the next year or so? Are you planning on doing anything differently?
We want to get our shirts into more independent retail stores (like
D-Structure!) and do custom packaging. Would also like to be a bit more
consistent in our release schedule, sometimes we get caught up in other
projects and let too much time slip by.
Five songs you can’t stop listening to right now?
Ade: was listening to the new Antony & The Johnsons album today and
probably again tomorrow. So, everything on the ‘Swanlights’ album.
Dave: Interpol. Also, been listening to http://5by5.tv/talkshow
What do you like to do when you’re not developing and distributing
awesome T-Shirts?
Taking pictures, drawing, playing video games, finding new eating places,
going to shows and filling out questionnaires like this one.
Any last words or shout outs?
THANK YOU!
