On April 23rd, well-groomed Brits protested. Assembled outside the Abercrombie & Fitch flagship store in London.  These dapperly dressed individuals were  standing to affirm against Abercrombie & Fitch’s company plan to open a store on Savile Row.  Savile Row is know in London as the shopping street that has long been the home of fine British tailoring. Protesters carried signs that read “Give Three Piece A Chance.” The protest was organized by The Chap, a British gentlemen’s magazine.

Looking for a fun evening out, something seperate to enjoy from the norm with friends, you should stop by TheGlint.  Over the next three weeks TheGlint will be featuring various artists from a diverse disiplines within the art community.  Diciplines that consist of music, art, dance, and even film.

The Glint is a live-work community overlooking San Francisco from the heights of Twin Peaks.  When founding the live work community, Charles Lee, Alexandros Pagidas, and Damian Madray felt as if the seven bedroom, four storey home would aid in inspiring artists with its sweeping San Francisco views along with TheGlints contemporary look and feel.  The community accelerates the creation and creators of value through design, philosophy, the arts & sciences, technology and entrepreneurship. Aspiring to shift the conception of heroism from historical warrior ideals to a new paradigm of creativity, collaboration and innovation.

The Art Flux project is a participatory exhibit for artists to showcase their various disciplines in aid of a good cause.  Art Flux’s aim is to help fund an innovative non-profit called HopeMob. HopeMob, a similar idea as a Flash Mob that creates dance and brings spontaneous joy and laughter.  HopeMob will bring caring strangers together to create a sudden, yet organized relief and hope all over the world! All proceeds of the exhibition go to HopeMob!

A confrontational display of man versus woman, dark versus pink, the beautiful alluring, youthful naivety, the city by the bay, and objectified woman, through solid black lines, electronic colors, on paper.  This is what Tyler Wintermute will be gracing our lucky store with debuting on our walls May 4th!  ‘Hotnoise’ occurs when a talented young artist, Tyler Wintermute, combines electric colors, alluring chaos, and beautiful lampoon cartoons for a one-man show of large scale electronically colored, hand-drawn illustrations.

These works are truly a peek inside the mind of an artistic genius. A strict craftsman, Tyler’s work explores themes of San Francisco, youth, sexuality and the visual nonsensical. The merging of comic book aesthetics and Tyler’s own personal drama gives way to a personal vivid imagery, that allows the viewer to not only escape, but to personally enter into a true fictional world of blunt illustration and harsh reality. The show will capture Tyler’s specific examinations among illustration, subject, and execution.

Tyler Wintermute, originally from Lake Oswego, Oregon, now an Alamo Square resident, will showcase over a years worth of illustrations reflecting the artists’ inspirations within his medium. Tyler is the first place winner of a Will Eisner Award in the 2001 Competition, “Comics: An Original American Art Form.” Will Eisner developed early comic books and comic art from the early Archie Comic cover, “The Spirit” to later Batman and Superman drawings. Graduated in 2006, Tyler has a BA degree in Cinema from San Francisco State University.
His exhibit will run from May 4th thru May 28th! Come check it out!

Three years ago, in April 2009, DJ Gordo Cabeza embarked upon a journey; bringing the smoothest Motown music every Monday, to Madrone Art Bar, in SF. Armed with nostalgia for Motown music, a desire to create a weekly event for friends and family to boogie to, and tons of soulful Motown tunes. Motown On Mondays (MOM) was born. Gordo, soon after, was joined by his local San Francisco DJ friends – Phleck, Matteo & Timoteo Gigante. After one year of diligence and persistent creative additions, people were waking up to what is now quite possibly the most talked about weekly event in SF.

MOM SF now has a roster of talented vocalists, producers, DJs, and a massive following of dance eager fans filling various venues nation wide.  When starting Gordo’s little Monday weekly, little did he anticipate that MOM SF would evolve into MOM LA, MOM Honolulu, and MOM NYC.  With some of the best DJs from around the globe steadily gracing MOM SF, this once small Monday weekly, is now becoming legendary!

***Myron & E (Timmion, Stones Throw)***

Myron & E are singers from differing musical backgrounds. The two met working in the tour outfit of Bay Area indie-hip hop legends Blackalicious. The senior member of the duo, Myron Glasper, got his start in music in the early 90s working as a back-up singer in Los Angeles. The mysterious “E’s” is actually the DJ known as E Da Boss, whose music has been released on labels including San Francisco’s Om Records.

Myron & E’s music might seem to be a radical departure for two hip hop-reared Californians, but the duo slide into their new-roles like tenured soul stars. The Soul Investigators backing tracks – lush, string-swept affairs that revel in analog tape hiss and the overall warmth of live musicianship – came together under the tight guidance of producer and recording engineer Didier Selin.

Our friend and vocalist Maria “Songbird” Remos may spend her time frolicking in San Francisco, but O’ahu, Hawai’i is home. Starting out with improv jazz, Maria has developed her sound to include an eclectic mix of soul, hip hop, jazz, and reggae. Her new mixtape, Speakeasy as Pie Vol. 2, is a spirited blend of vintage soul sounds, infused with both electronic and hip hop.

As spring blossoms as to does your yearning, for festival season.  Music festivals that is.  The thoughts of summer always bring about festival banter.  Friends, hyping on which festivals they wanna boogie at this summer, rumors of whom will be gracing various line ups, camping preperation, festival attire, and always, the discovery of your newest favorite musicians and artists.

South by Southwest [SXSW] is one of largest and longest running music festivals that starts the spring season.  Held in Austin, Texas, SXSW has more than 2,000 performers and 90 [plus] venues around the city.  SXSW is known for film, music, and interactive events.  This year, the festival occured on March 9th until March 18th, and I had to go!  Roaming Austin with some of the superb Bay Area allies I could ask for, and some of San Francisco’s best electronic music artists from Frite Nite and Surefire Sound was absolutely, awesome!  Biggest of ups guys, ya’ll played some amazing shows!

Being that SXSW is 9 days long, I wasn’t able to stay the entire duration, but I absolutely made some of the best shows.  The art, graffiti, music, and food never disappointed!  Only spending around $7 on each delicious meal were definitely, “hellejuah” moments!  Not only does Texas have this amazing thing called Tex Mex, they also have some of the best classic southern food, ever!  The downtown area of Austin, on Sixth Street is the mecca, for all the action!  

Lining Sixth Street are bars, coffee houses, resturants, night clubs, and clothing stores, all hosting different artists and musicians.  On my last night in Austin, I ended the trip at what I thought  was the best line up for the night, the Warp party, hosted by BandPage HQ.  You had to RSVP to get in, and I am sure glad I did.  

The Warp party was the most amazing amount of awe-inspiring music ever!  Only fault, as soon as I got there, I was thirsty.  A friend came over surprising me with a delicious Tex Mex Bloody Mary [new favorite!], and then, two seperate stages, two seperate bars, we we’re then stuck at the Expansion Stage.  Missing the middle of Starkey’s bass crushing beats.  Kinda bummed, feeling like we should maybe just chug, and go join our friends at the other stage.  We quickly realized, we might have had the better experience at the Expansion stage.  Getting to see Low Limit of Laser Sword awe the crowd with his edge slicing performance, was a treat, but we also met pro snowboarder Pat Milbery, from So-Gnar.  Pat was there, slapping up this little beauty with strictly sharpies.

Pat, being born and raised in the Midwest, we instantly clicked.  Currently Pat lives in Summit County in Colorado and shreds the Rockies, hard!  Pat had flown to Austin to do the same as me, enjoy the festivities.  BandPage HQ also asked him to do a mural during the event.  Pat jumped at the chance, and well, I jumped at your style, it’s clean and so San Franciscan concise!  Nice kicking it with you Mr. Milbery, best of luck in the mountians!  But please, make it out to the Bay soon, we would love to have you!

SXSW was massive on the success scale!  I would give all reccomendations to put it high on your bucket list for 2013!  Thank you to everyone in Austin for hosting such a impressive festival!  Lastly, thank you to Mr. Taylor from Switched On electronics music shop for hosting us during the festival!

Ever feel as if you’re a pawn in a digital game.  Stop!  Level up, find your princess, hang with the homies, This is Not a Video Game!  Devoir Art Collective will be hosting their new art installation “This is Not a Video Game” at D-Structure on Friday April 6th from 8pm-11pm.  With it’s floor to ceiling exhibit, Devoir will be reminding us that life is more than a video game.

Devoir has been blowing NYC, Vegas, and much of Cali up with their new works of brilliance.  Not only will the Lower Haight art walk be happening on the opening night, but Devoir has also promised that this installation is going to be one of the biggest and most majestic to date!

All Devoir art is hand made photos, prints, and frames created by Devoir artists. Using various resources, they have chosen to forgo the common process of buying prints and frames, instead opting to produce each piece of art by hand. Yes, the process is more time consuming, the artists feel that each picture deserves the utmost respect and care [much respect!].  They also keep each print exclusive, only producing one piece from each image. When admiring a Devoir piece, you can have comfort in knowing that the artists personally shot, printed, varnished and mounted each picture on hand-built frames.

Devoir is a collaborative fine art and photography duo ran by Dylan Ozanich and Jason Backrak. They focus on capturing real life moments conveying both the beauty and struggles of the everyday. Their photography ranges from the rawness of life in urban areas to the pure beauty of rural scenery, including everything and anything in between. They believe that photography is the premier way to instantly capture the moment, so it is important to include every kind of lifestyle or scene in their art. The artists hope that fellow enthusiast for everyday life can appreciate one of the large variety of stills to often remind them of what is important.

Dylan and Jason chose the name “Devoir” because of the definition of the word; an act or expression of respect or courtesy, the necessity to do something. They live by what the word represents, expressing their creativity and exploring anything within an artistic medium in order to capture the beauty of everyday life. With this is mind, it becomes easy for them to give their all while exploring a continuously growing passion and love for art.

We are in for a Berlin treat!  Modeselektor hailing from their home in Berlin, Germany, Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary met after the fall of the Berlin Wall.  With parents and police more concerned on the status of the their country, underground soirees began.  Acid house took off, and that is where the Modeselektor pair met, in 1995.  The pair began with DJ set under the name of Fundamental Knowledge, progressing into live sets with Pfadfinderei, a local Berlin design collective.  Modeselektor then met Ellen Allien and were quickly signed to BPitch Control.  Modeselektor began touring around Europe, gaining international recognition, and finally releasing their first full length album called “Hello Mom!” in 2005 on their first label, BPitch Control.  Beatport named Modeselektor “Best Dubstep and Grime artist” in 2008.  Modeselektor continues to be a large influential musical player in Berlin’s cultural agenda, curating a stage at the 2010 and 2011 MELT! Festival in Berlin. Modeselektor is busy building the Monkeytown records empire, showcasing events, and releasing a compilation series.

Lucky us, they’re making a San Franciscan appearance.  Friday, April 13th, at 1015 Folsom St, Modeselektor will be slicing the air waves on their Monkeytown tour with main room support from Distal, Clicks & Whistles, and Dov.  Their will be a Beat Church takeover upstairs with Digital Rust, Djunya, Bogl, Smasheltooth, Kitty-D, and Wolfbitch.  The front room will be grooving compliments of DJ Dials, Benito, Ryury, and Santa Muerte.

As times are always changing, as to is technology and the way we utilize media.  For most people I know CD’s are dead.  Most have an ipod or auxilery jack in their car, their home stereo, or just listen to music via their cellphones.  In all round-about ways, a shiny silver disc is almost seen as being extinct in the music distribution scene.  Pearl and the Beard have taken this knowledge and created an innovative way to sell their single, via art.  The band has diministed the idea of a CD single and created posters and postcards.  On these prints are a download code, you can simply download the single directly to where you want.  No importing hassle, no scratched CD’s, no wasteful plastic!  Way to go Pearl and the Beard!

Friday, March 9th, we are honored to be hosting a book launch party for the new work of Juliann Brown.  A San Francisco local, from southern Illinois, she grew up surrounded by the typical outdoorsmens beards.  Coming to San Francisco in 2000, Juliann decieded to create a photo journal of various San Fanciscans beards.  The 138 page book boasts humourus commentary, and tales of how she found each bearded fellow.
