Join us Friday February 3rd 8PM, for the opening of “Nothing Goes To Waste” Two rabbits Studios has worked hard to bring these beauties up to the Bay. We’ll have the good time ingredients ready for you to enjoy: art, booze, & bountiful beats.

“Nothing Goes to Waste” is a retrospective of work by Bob Motown and Mike Thacker of Two Rabbits Studios. Those who have been to their 3,200 square foot warehouse in downtown LA know the aesthetic appeal of the printing process and the by-products created during any given job. No mixing stick, test print, strip of paper, mess, or color is wasted at their studio. Motown and Thacker have repurposed and recycled elements of commercial jobs to create new works of fine art that celebrate the method behind their hundreds of hand pulled screen prints. Their monoprints, which contain endless layers of imagery from test runs of different print editions, are a striking illustration of how art can derive from creative run-off. “Nothing Goes to Waste” will showcase new works alongside a collection of screen printed Two Rabbits classics.

Two Rabbits Studios is a design firm, commercial screen print shop, and fine art studio run by Los Angeles-based artists, Mike Thacker and Bob Motown. Since 2007, the pair have designed and printed hundreds of rock posters and promotional pieces for movies and video games. Two Rabbits started small in a North Hollywood backyard—less than five years later, and they’ve been featured in galleries, Flatstock poster shows, and craft fairs in the United States and UK. They’ve worked with Warner Music Group and concert promoters Goldenvoice for artists ranging from Skrillex to Wu Tang to Portishead. Recently, Thacker and Motown’s focus has been on fine art pieces that reflect upon their hand-printed process and design. Their work can be seen at tworabbitsstudios.com. Also, check out their rad tumblr account tworabbits.tumblr.com.

Dear DKNG,

It’s been a long time since we saw you two last. Roughly 96 days; which is 1/4 of a year, 1 full season, or 3 new moons if you follow a lunar calendar, not that we’re counting or anything.

Yeah we get it, you guys are becoming a big deal. Last week you were featured on CBS and called “mesmerizing.” Just keep in mind CBS is that same company that decided to remake Hawaii 5-0, so many people may question their judgement. There was that Gizmodo post last week, too. We understand you probably haven’t called in a while with your phone ringing all day for interviews, but couldn’t you two make time to give old D-Structure a call? Even if it’s just to say “Hi D-Structure, this is DKNG. How are you doing? That’s great! Oh us? Well we’ve just been slaving away making awesome innovative prints and designs. Send Nana my regards. Smell ya later.”

All joking aside, everyone from D-Structure gives a big “Congratulations!” to DKNG for their well deserved buzz and designing another beautiful poster. To top if off we couldn’t even get our hands on a coveted Explosions in the Sky Mammoth Print, since they sold out in 24-hours! You guys are killing it.

In a Photoshop perfect world we would Ctrl-Z the distance between. Alas, there are no real life Gaussian Blurs and we must face the sharp reality that we live 382 miles away.

The show celebrated their 100th poster. Since then DKNG has kept their stylus pressed to the tablet, meaning they have yet to take a break from designing. Their work for heavy hitters like Adam Corolla, Kevin Smith, Cake, and HBO’s True Blood have garnered them notoriety. Recently, they debuted their poster for D-Structure SF’s dream band The Black Keys. You can check out their design process in the video below.

Poster Process – The Black Keys from DKNG Studios on Vimeo.

DKNG will also be at the L.A. Renegade Craft Fair and Unique L.A. Summer Show later this month.

DSSF: What does DKNG stand for?
DKNG stands for Dan Kuhlken and Nathan Goldman.

DSSF: How was DKNG formed?
DKNG: Nathan and I met in San Diego in high school on the track team, became friends and eventually formed a band. We played music together for several years and once college came around it became increasingly difficult to get together and jam. Nathan was always interested in design and I’ve always been into illustration, so I reached out to him to see if he’d be interested in collaborating on projects.

DSSF: When you’re designing for a client do you allow them to work with you on developing the piece?
DKNG: We like to keep our client as involved as possible to ensure they will be happy with the end product. However, on some projects the client asks us to just create something and they trust our judgement. For many projects we prefer to have most of the creative control, but we are very understanding of the client’s tastes as well.

DSSF: For the D-Structure SF show, DKNG was celebrating its’ 100th poster. Which piece was the 100th one?
DKNG: We created a poster that displayed our first 99 posters in a grid, which was shown chronologically from the top down. So the poster itself was not only our 100th but a celebration of our entire poster portfolio.

DSSF: Do you have a favorite piece from the D-Structure show?
DKNG: Personally having the chance to frame some of my original sketches and ink drawings was a treat. If we hadn’t included them in the show, they most likely would still be piled up in some drawer in our office never seeing the light of day.

DSSF: What is your favorite piece; poster, tee, website, etc, that you’ve designed with DKNG?
DKNG:My answer to that seems to change frequently. I feel like a lot of our newest posters are the most exciting. It’s kind of like how a band always wants to play their new songs rather than old. I would say recently the Black Keys and Phish posters have been really fun to create.

DSSF: You’ve designed logos, apparel, websites, prints, and even music packaging. Is there any other medium you want to explore?
DKNG: Definitely video. Nathan has a degree in film from USC, and I know he’s been itching to put it to use one of these days. We would love to pursue title sequences in TV and film. We also want to make music videos.

DSSF: Which medium is your favorite?
DKNG: As of now, anything screen printed. I think it’s such a cool process and I can’t see myself getting tired of it anytime soon.

DSSF: Not since the 1960’s has so much attention been given to the detail in rock posters, do you feel like your work is reminiscent to the 1960’s poster art movement?
DKNG: Not exactly. I mean, not in the sense of style. I feel like the 1960’s was full of psychedelic posters. We admire the style, but I feel like their are so many other styles out their to explore that deserve attention. Idealistically, I’d like to think we are discovering new styles that will one day be seen as classic. One can dream.

DSSF: You work with so many amazing bands/groups, most recently The Black Keys, how was that experience?
DKNG: It was incredible. We are so honored. They have been nothing but amazing to work with. Not to mention, they have an enormous and dedicated fan base, so it was a huge treat to be part of their spotlight for a temporary amount of time.

DSSF: Do you ever get starstruck?
DKNG: I used to. As I meet more celebrities I realize more and more that they are just as human as anyone else, and in most cases like to be treated like normal citizens. But when I meet someone I admire, I admit I still get flustered.

DSSF: You don’t have to name names, but have you ever had to design for a group you dislike?
DKNG: It happens. Over time you begin to instinctively know which clients are going to be more frustrating than others. But in order to run a business we have to sometimes bite the bullet and simply do our best to make those clients happy.

DSSF: Do you ever attend the events you have designed the poster for?
DKNG: Yup. We’re pretty busy these days so it’s hard to make it out to all the events, but it’s always a nice treat/capper to the end of a project.

DSSF: What are your favorite colors?
DKNG: I’m not sure what Nathan’s is. I guess I should since we’ve been best friends and running a business for over 5 years now, but mine has always been black. I know some people will be snobby and say that black is not really a color, but whatever. It looks great with everything and I think it’s awesome.

DSSF: Now, what are your favorite colors, but in code?
DKNG: So I guess if I wanted to be consistent I should pick the hex code for black which is #000000 (Also one of my favorite numbers, and again snobby people will argue it’s not a number at all). But I also really like #C12300 since it’s our official red for the DKNG logo. Nathan knows a lot of Pantones by heart, but I will spare you the geekathon.

DSSF: Is it true that it wasn’t until recently that you started working with a tablet?
DKNG: Not entirely. I received one as an award for a poster contest. As of now I’ve only used the mouse component, but I have never use the pen before. I still use a external apple track pad to create everything. Most people think it’s insane.

DSSF: How does designing with a tablet compare to not using one?
DKNG: Haha. I still wouldn’t know. I guess from what I hear it’s nice since it allows you to feel like your are drawing with a pen. Don’t get me wrong, I love drawing. But I’m a perfectionist when it comes to computer generated imagery and I like to use perfect geometry a lot. If I want a hand drawn style I’ll just draw it and then scan it into the computer.

DSSF: Do you have a preference?
DKNG: Track pad.

DSSF: Who, whom, or what would you really want to design a poster for?
DKNG: I still would like to do a Dave Matthews Band and/or Radiohead poster. I am also interested in doing more movie posters, but it would be awesome to create more posters that served an inspirational cause. Shepard Fairey sort of did that with the Obama HOPE poster, but I’d like to stay away from politics and focus more on the positive message.

DSSF: If you have been trapped on a desert island and could have 1 book, 1 movie, and 1 album, which would they be?
DKNG: The bible, Shinder’s List and Enya…. just kidding. Give me a huge book of blank pages to write and draw in, a camera to make my own movie about my life on the island, and a guitar and recording equipment so I can score the film.

DSSF: Similarly, you are now trapped on a dessert island, what tasty confectionery treats surround you?
DKNG: Beef jerky.

DSSF: Do you have any events coming up?
DKNG: I’m actually on a flight typing out these answers right now. I’m on my way to exhibit our work at Flatstock (a poster convention) during this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. I’ll be doing the same thing in Seattle for Bumbershoot in the beginning of September.

DSSF: How about new work, anything recently or soon to be released from DKNG?
DKNG: I am actually partnering with “The Say Something Poster Project” which is an annual poster contest that reaches out to designers to create posters that inspire and motivate today’s youth. I’ll be doing all the branding for the project along with reaching out to the poster artist community soon. It’s going to be a really cool thing and I am excited to be a part of it.

DSSF: Where do you see DKNG going in the future?
DKNG: It’s wide open really. I’m ready for whatever comes. In the meantime I’ll just keep doing what I love.

Also, if you hear it you see it at some point, meaning no hidden sounds. Their videos utilize fast jump cuts and multiple frames to showcase the many instruments played. However, one of their more simple songs is a cover of Mark Owen’s “Makin Out” which is heart-wrenchingly sweet.

Fun Fact: Pomplamoose means grapefruit in French.
