“Nothing Goes to Waste” is a retrospective of work by Bob Motown and Mike Thacker of Two Rabbits Studios. Those who have been to their 3,200 square foot warehouse in downtown LA know the aesthetic appeal of the printing process and the by-products created during any given job. No mixing stick, test print, strip of paper, mess, or color is wasted at their studio. Motown and Thacker have repurposed and recycled elements of commercial jobs to create new works of fine art that celebrate the method behind their hundreds of hand pulled screen prints. Their monoprints, which contain endless layers of imagery from test runs of different print editions, are a striking illustration of how art can derive from creative run-off. “Nothing Goes to Waste” will showcase new works alongside a collection of screen printed Two Rabbits classics.

Two Rabbits Studios is a design firm, commercial screen print shop, and fine art studio run by Los Angeles-based artists, Mike Thacker and Bob Motown. Since 2007, the pair have designed and printed hundreds of rock posters and promotional pieces for movies and video games. Two Rabbits started small in a North Hollywood backyard—less than five years later, and they’ve been featured in galleries, Flatstock poster shows, and craft fairs in the United States and UK. They’ve worked with Warner Music Group and concert promoters Goldenvoice for artists ranging from Skrillex to Wu Tang to Portishead. Recently, Thacker and Motown’s focus has been on fine art pieces that reflect upon their hand-printed process and design. Their work can be seen at tworabbitsstudios.com. Whether you are vying for a win over our adored staff or battling it out with your homies.  It’s a merrymaking muse thats marvelous getting lost in.

Rules/Guidlines:

1.  Find [or macgyver] a paddle

2.  Form a coterie [aka-circle] surrounding the table.

3.  The player standing in the traditional serving postion serves it up to the person directly across from them, that person then moves to the right.

4.  The person to the servers left then takes their place, and the rest of the group moves accordingly, counterclockwise.

5.  Meanwhile, the person who was served the ball then returns the ball and shuffles out of the way to the right.

6.  The rest of the circle then continues moving counterclockwise.

7.  FYI- If someone causes disorder and messes up in the game THEY OUT!  No hitting the net, hitting off the table, or any other sort of illegal manner.

8.  When there are only two players left in the game, they play a short traditional game.  The first to make three points wins.

9.  When the game is over the finalists tap their paddles on the table signifying a new game is about to start.

Tips:

Pop your collar, grease your hair, acquire a sweatband, and be cool.  American Tripps has a cult following of avid “pongers”, so keep on your toes, this is a competition remember.  Lastly chat it up, you might meet your future best friend at the table.

Sleepers Awaken.

As artists, we constantly retreat to a place of stimulation in our imagination. Our dreams give us our hopes and desires. We day dream of a world in which life is idealized, our work, the way we see ourselves, and very commonly, the relationships we have with others. And when we come back to reality we may feel disappointed, hopeful, compelled, depressed, empowered, grounded. Whatever the case, these cerebral thoughts give us inspirations to transform the world according to our dreams or to express the frustration we feel when our fantasies are so unreal. We wish to share these narratives. Show the viewer what goes on inside our troubled heads. What keeps us up at night. Whether it be a fantasy story we feel the need to show, the way we relate to character arches, or the emotions we dwell on. Show what we have pulled from in reality and warped it in our minds. At times, our dreams show more truth than what may stand in front of us in the waking world.

D-Structure is excited to feature returning artist Nick Beery for the November installation. Beery’s new show “The Deathside: A dark tribute to Star Wars, Pop Culture, Underground Evil and a deathly fairwell to the repetitious mutations of fan art” will run for the entire month with an opening reception on Friday, November 4. Limited edition Tee’s with Beery’s designs will be available for purchase at the event, along with prints, and more!

Mobile Libations will be onsite to quench any thirst you may have. DJ Ollie will be providing auditory stimulation as well.

In Odenplan, Stockholm an effort to promote physical activity inspired a train station owner to install musical stairs. Check the video out, this looks like too much fun.

Back from their two year hiatus the garage-rock/indie/one-of-my-favorite-bands, The Strokes, are back. Their new album Angles dropped early last month.

The album cover art appears to be a homage to M.C. Escher’s Stairs. I recommend giving the album a listen to. Despite taking a break from recording, The Strokes still manage to retain their signature sound. Be careful though! The single Under Cover of Darkness is incredibly addictive. The video is not bad either. I bet that “Play” button feels pretty violated.

Last week Radiohead released the first edition of their newspaper, The Universal Sigh. Featuring short stories, art, and poetry, the newspaper was designed to help promote upcoming release of their new album, The King of Limbs. The newspaper, which seems very similar to a zine, is available for free at various locations. To our neighbors in San Francisco, you can try to snag a copy at Amoeba Records in the upper Haight. However, I doubt there will be any left. The Universal Sigh was met with much enthusiasm from die-hard Radiohead fans who were lined up outside. For those of you who aren’t willing to wake up early for a Radiohead zine, don’t worry. There is PDF version circulating the net which is easy find and download.

In other Radiohead news, The King of Limbs, was dropped last Monday. The album was met with mixed reviews. What do you all think of it?
