Album You Should Be Listening to This Week – Big Boi – Sir Lucious Left Foot (The Son of Chico Dusty)
So let me start this review off by saying that I have waited a very very very long time for this album to come out. I first caught wind of it’s potential release over 3 years ago when video was released of Big Boi listening to “Fo Yo Sorrows” in a studio, supposedly right after the song had just been recorded. Since then it had been one delay after another. The release date continued to get pushed back very couple months due to legal issues and the inability to find a label willing to release the album. After 2 years of debate over whether the album would ever see the light of day Big Boi finally had reached an agreement to have the album released under Def Jam records.
The drama did not end here though. Being one half of Outkast it was only natural that Big Boi would have Andre 3000 appear on the record, but the two songs that were to be released on the record featuring verses from Andre 3000, “Royal Flush” and “Lookin 4 Ya,” never received the legal clearance to allow them to be included on Sir Lucious Left Foot. Big Boi explained that this was due to Jive records unwillingness to allow Andre 3000 to be allowed to appear on the album or any future solo efforts by Big Boi. A very selfish and bitter move on Jive records part in my opinion, being that they were simply mad that Big Boi had left their label so he could actually have his album released.
Despite these set backs though, Sir Lucious Left Foot (The Son of Chico Dusty) will be released on July 6th, but the album is streaming in it’s entirety at Myspace.com/BigBoi
My review of the album is as follows: I consider myself to be a very huge fan of Outkast. In my opinion they are the greatest duo to ever make hip-hop music and are both individually two of the most talented emcees to ever bless the microphone. Together they compliment each other better than any other group I’ve ever heard.
Knowing that this album was going to be strictly Big Boi I was very interested to see how it would turn out, because most people tend to say that Andre 3000 is the brains behind Outkast as well as a lot of what makes Outkast so damn good. I have always been a very big fan of Big Boi so I kept my mind open to whatever he might come out with.
Let me say right here and right now that this is the best hip-hop album to come out this year, hands down. I might even go so far as to say it will be the best hip-hop album to come out this year, period. Every track on the album is solid, and there was not a single point throughout listening to Sir Lucious Left Foot that I was ever bored or disappointed with what I heard. Every verse is Big Boi doing what Big Boi does best, and every guest appearance was a perfect fit and compliment to the song. The album was well worth the 3 year wait and since it has been streaming I have not been listening to anything else
I will definitely be picking up the Limited Edition version of the album when it is released on July 6th and I highly suggest you do the same. This album will instantly be a hip-hop classic and a must have for anyone that is a fan of Outkast or just good hip-hop in general. At the top of the page I have included the two unreleased songs featuring Andre 3000 for you to listen to but be sure to check out the entire album, especially the hit single “Shutterbug” which is definitely the best track of the album.
Until next time, as always, support good hip-hop music and I hope you take the time to enjoy an amazing album by one of the greatest emcees of all time.
